Last weekend me and Jim went to Budapest for the weekend and to say it surpassed expectations would be a massive understatement! I’d heard good things from everyone I’d spoken to, but then again the majority of people rave about the city breaks they fly to and from my experience, I don’t think I’ve ever been anywhere that I’ve hated – So I wasn’t surprised to hear it was lots of fun. Most places in Eastern Europe are cheaper than London (not that that’s hard!) so cheap beer was high on the agenda.
We got incredibly lucky with our AirBnb! Located right above a street food market – Karaván, that as soon as we saw the food from above, we knew we made the best choice. Also, coincidentally, we happened to be only a couple doors down from the biggest ruins bar in Pest, Szimpla Kert. Thee best news, cheap beer and food, literally minutes from our front door! We were winning at Budapest and had only been there a couple of hours.
We were there for 3 nights but managed to cram everything we wanted in AND have time for a nap or two!
Have a beer in Szimpla Kert
Eat chimney cake (Kürtőskalács) at the street food market Karavan
Visit the Dohány Street Synagogue
Bathe in the Széchenyi Thermal Bath
Walk along the River Danube
Look over to Pest from Fishermans Bastillion
Drive around Margaret Island in a Pedal Buggy
Try authentic Hungarian cuisine at Hungarikum Bistro (but make sure you book in advance!)
Learn about the fascist and communist regimes at Terror House
And finally explore the beautiful buildings and streets of Buda Castle and Buda Castle Hill
I’m off to Krakow this weekend and Prague mid November, so if anyone has any recommendations, I would love to hear them!
